Plan an afterschool activity with this three-pronged approach of visualizing inputs, outputs and outcomes easily and painlessly (sometimes called "the Logic Model")! We will walk through a mock activity together and illustrate how to engage students in planning, leadership, skill-building and reflection. Designed specifically to meet the needs of afterschool providers, NHMU’s afterschool program will take students on an unforgettable adventure where the wonders of the natural world come alive. This pilot program will ignite young minds through hands-on learning, interactive experiences, and a captivating field trip to the Natural History Museum of Utah. This presentation is structured as an information session highlighting three components; afterschool program site visits, self-guided STEM activities including field trips. This presentation is designed to test assumptions, verify demand and impact, and lay the groundwork for the launch of a full-scale museum program for fall 2025. (It's absolutely true!) Come find out how. During this workshop, we will take a closer look at the Social Development Strategy as an essential youth protective framework and consider the five basic elements that together provide strong social development for young people: bonding, opportunities, skills, clear and healthy standards, and recognition. You will come to understand more clearly what young people need most to build good and healthy lives, and together we will learn how to use this strategy in our various communities to nurture more resilient humans and create stronger buffers around them. This session is adapted from a Little Flower Yoga teacher training activity and will challenge not only your thoughts and beliefs about your student's behavior, but also your own personal reaction to their behavior. Attendees will be given tools to decipher the difference along with examples and guided activities to explore if the "inappropriate behavior" is really a problem or if it is their reaction to the behavior. Attendees will work together to find solutions and ways to regulate themselves if they discover that the problem is not the student's behavior itself but the participant's reaction to the behavior. These sessions will help you prepare for upcoming observations and support overall and continuous quality improvement. Empower your afterschool program with strategies to teach leadership skills to youth participants using an everyday item—a deck of playing cards! This presentation will demonstrate how to design engaging activities that build leadership qualities while fostering a supportive learning environment through non-evaluative language. It is no secret that afterschool kids love crafts! Afterschool crafting helps kids learn new interests and find ways to enjoy life. But how do you add that "secret sauce" that turns a craft into a deeper learning experience. This session is a little bit like making zucchini cake: we will hide the "vegetables" of learning in something really sweet. In this session we will create three different hands-on crafts with hidden STEM learning. You will learn how to increase STEM interest through fun and engaging creative experiences, no experience necessary. Bring your creative mind and join us for a relaxing but informative workshop.
